Climate change
The British Embassy Bangkok works with several Thai partners to to promote a low carbon, high growth, global economy. Highlights include:
- Working with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to produce a report on “The Economics of Climate Change in Southeast Asia: A Regional Review" [PDF, 9.65MB, new window]
- The report assesses the overall vulnerability of the region, and highlights ways that will help countries best adapt to climate change. It also identifies options that will help the region reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.

The Bangkok Big Switch Project, a joint project with HSBC, British Council, Metropolitan Electricity Authority, The Mall Group, J.C. DeCaux, and other partners. The project aims to raise public awareness on global warming and the need to reduce electricity consumption, which is one of the major sources of Thailand’s carbon emissions.
The Bangkok big switch
- Sponsoring the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) to organise a capacity development programme on Green Growth for key policy makers from Southeast Asian countries. The programme will highlight the significance of resource scarcity and climate change.
- Implementing projects to promote awareness of climate change and practical action to counter it; including a collaborative research project between the Met Office Hadley Centre, the British Council and Chulalongkorn University to predict climate change weather; a climate hazard mapping exercise; and the ‘Eco-Footprints’ project that helps schoolchildren measure their own carbon footprint;
- Running a Climate Change Poster Competition in partnership with the Central Retails Corporation, the Bangkok Post, British Airways and the British Council. The competition raised awareness about climate change amongst young Thais. Participants designed a poster with 10 suggestions to reduce their carbon footprint.
- Using our contacts in the business and NGO communities to help promote awareness of the climate change threat in Thailand;
- Promoting British commercial expertise in renewables and green technologies such as waste management;
- Arranging for UK companies specialising in carbon trading to visit Thailand to promote their technologies and services, share their experiences and build contacts with Thai counterparts.
