Applying for a UK passport in Thailand

The Basics

If you are resident in the UK the Identity and Passport Service (IPS) deal with all passport applications. You'll find all the forms you need, and instructions, on the IPS website.

If you do not live in the UK you may apply for a passport from your nearest Embassy, Consulate or High Commission, in the case of Thailand this is the British Embassy Bangkok. Alternatively, you may also apply to the Identity and Passport Service (IPS) in person whilst visiting the UK. In order to do this, you need to make an appointment with IPS in the UK and you must provide an address in the UK to which the passport may be posted. Applicants will have to be available at this address to sign for the receipt of the passport. Please note that IPS do not accept applications by post or e-mail if you live abroad. You will find all the forms you need and instructions on the IPS website.

Passport applications take 10 working days to process from the receipt of a correctly completed and paid for application. There is no fast-track service available. Applications are dealt with strictly in the order that they are received and are not prioritised, except for in the most compelling compassionate circumstances. It is therefore essential that you apply for your passport well in advance of your planned travel date.

Additional pages cannot be added or inserted into UK passports. If your passport is full, you will need to apply for a replacement.

The Process

  1. Print out the application form. We have provided guidance notes to help you to complete your application. Please note that the forms are in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). To open them on screen and print them out, you'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader (version 4 or above). You can download it free of charge from the Adobe website.
  2. Once you have printed out and completed the forms, please initial each page in the box provided. We cannot accept your application if this is not done. If an applicant is unable to write, their thumbprint in the signature box may be accepted. In this case, you must provide a letter from a responsible person - such as a relative, doctor or the counter-signatory- confirming the reason(s) why the applicant is unable to sign. The counter-signatory does not need to witness the thumbprint.

Requirements

  • 2 recent identical photos (35mm x 45mm) with a white, light grey or cream background. The UK Passport Agency have strict guidelines on the quality of passport photographs. Photographs which do not meet the guidelines will not be accepted.
  • completed form;

Applying in Person

Bring your form, supporting documents and the fee (in local currency) to Consular Section at the British Embassy Bangkok.

Applying by post (Fee must be the exact amount only)

You can apply to renew a full or expired passport by post. You must ensure that the passport application form is correctly filled in and that both the form and one of the photos have been countersigned. You must include your passport and can only pay in the following ways:

  • Banker's Draft plus Baht 200 administration fee;
  • Money or Postal orders payable to 'British Embassy' to be cashed at Nana Post Office, Bangkok 10112 (Please note that online postal orders are not accepted).

To return passport by the Express Mail Service (EMS) please add Baht 100 for within Thailand or Baht 500 if it is to be returned to Laos.

Our staff will not be able to process your application or there may be a delay issuing your passport if:

  • you have used the wrong form or completed it incorrectly
  • you do not provide the correct fee or payee
  • you do not include the correct postal or courier charge.

Cancelling your current passport

Your previous passport will usually be retained by us during the processing of your application. This is a requirement as the previous passport is electronically cancelled during the production process, and therefore invalid for travel . Once cancelled it will be returned to you unless it is being replaced due to damage, then it may be retained.

Replacement visa

It is your responsibility to ensure that any valid visas are transferred into the new passport by Thai Immigration/the relevant Embassy.
