Embassy intern
An experience of a lifetime
For many people the words British Embassy conjur up images of iron gates, long queues, and the haunting sound of visa stamping. However, students participating in the internship scheme are given a chance to experience diplomacy in action at the highest level. Some of our interns work closely with the Press and Public Affairs Section as well as handling tasks directly assigned by the ambassador.
Tan, a former intern from Chulalongkorn University, said that each project was interesting and challenging. The tasks included arranging a four-day provincial visit for the ambassador, accompanying him on the trip and writing a visit report, gathering information on candidates for the 2006 General Election and the election’s results; translating press releases; translating the ambassador’s speeches into Thai; accompanying the ambassador to press conferences and interviews; and exploring ways to improve the embassy website. "It is a chance for students to put theories into practice. The ambassador and the British Embassy officials are truly inspiring. The whole project has motivated me to strive to be better and better. It is definitely an experience of a lifetime!"
Peace, a former intern from Thammasat University said that “An internship with the British Embassy gave me a wonderful opportunity to learn more about how the world of diplomacy functions, to be with other talented intern friends, and to work with a professional and generous adviser. Thank you for every good memory."
"This programme gave me a lot that I can never get from anywhere else because here you are not treated as an outsider but as an actual employee of the embassy. We were surrounded by all the lovely and wonderful staff who are willing to guide and teach us all the way. They are just great! I am very grateful and honoured to have the opportunity to work here. For me, this is an experience that I'll never forget." said Kongkwan from Chulalongkorn University.
Pai, a Spanish major from Chulalongkorn added that "Being an intern at the British Embassy was a great experience, all the staff there warmly welcomed me as part of their team. All the wonderful memories would not have happened without all of them. This programme is very beneficial for those who would like to work internationally. I will never ever forget this memorable time."
