Embassy redevelopment

On 15 May 2006 the embassy sold 3.55 acres of its 12.75-acre estate to Tiang Chirathivat Real Estate Company. This consisted of the most polluted and noisiest part of the compound next to the six lane arterial road (Ploenchit) and the skytrain elevated railway. The embassy retained the historic residence, the War Memorial, the imposing statue of Queen Victoria, the lake and the park-like environment. Proceeds of the sale funded redevelopment of the embassy offices and a strengthening of the security perimeter. Many of the trees from the land sold were donated to the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority.

In early June 2006, the embassy began the first two phases of a redevelopment programme on the retained land. These involved strengthening the perimeter wall, re-siting the main entrance gatehouse on Wireless Road and developing a separate corridor of land to maintain vehicular access to Ploenchit Road with its own gatehouse. All these works were carried out with a view to preserving the green nature of the compound and retaining the vast majority of mature trees.

In January/February 2007, work started on the second phase of the project to provide additional staff accommodation. The War Memorial was relocated from its original site close to Ploenchit Road to a new site directly in front of the Ambassador's residence. At the same time the statue of Queen Victoria was removed from its site overlooking Ploenchit Road and relocated to a new site in the rear of the ambassador's garden, overlooking the lake.

At the end of February 2009 the accommodation project was completed and staff moved in during March 2009. Twenty four UK based staff, the Ambassador, plus the Gurkha contingent are now housed on compound. The accommodation comprises two semi detached four bed houses and a large block containing 2 two bed flats, 16 three bed flats and four 4 bed town houses. Recreational facilities were constructed as part of the overall package and comprise a club, multipurpose sports area suitable for tennis, five a side soccer etc, a swimming pool, well equipped gym and an indoor children's playroom.
