The first British Consul in Bangkok took up his post in 1856, but it was not until 1876 that the legation moved into its own building.  The embassy moved to its current site on Wireless Road in 1922. Located in the central business district, less than 5 minutes walk from the nearest skytrain station, the embassy provides a full range of functions - political, commercial, consular, visa, information, press and public affairs, and management.  The British Council have separate offices at Siam Square.  The embassy employs 153 members of staff, 33 UK nationals and 120 locally-engaged. The British Council has 146 members of staff, of whom 61 (including teachers) are UK nationals.

Mr Quinton Quayle has been ambassador since August 2007. The Political Section maintains and develops the close relationship between the UK Government and the Royal Thai Government, leading on UK Government policy priorities such as climate change, human rights and counter-terrorism. The Consular Section provides assistance and services to British nationals visiting or living in Thailand. The Commercial Section operates under the auspices of UK Trade & Investment, and works to develop stronger trade and investment between the UK and Thailand.  The Visa Section deals with visa applications to enter the UK to visit, study, live or work. The Communication Team is responsible for the presentation and promotion of UK Government policy in Thailand.
